W4R-D3N is a constructor miniboss that appears in Borderlands 2. It is the first constructor fought in the game and thus can tear apart attackers who are not prepared and are unaware of the constructor's array of deadly attacks. It is found after locating Roland inside of the Bloodshot Stronghold during the main story mission A Dam Fine Rescue. It will grab Roland and take him to the Bloodshot Ramparts, for extraction by Hyperion.
W4R-D3N is essentially an introduction to the importance of destroying Constructors. The mini-boss is a toned-down variant that lacks the deadly missile attacks that normal Constructors have but compensates for having protective shielding and an orange shield which reflects all bullets while it is up, however it does periodically drop.
The shield will only drop if an attacker is close enough to W4R-D3N. If they are too far away, it will be permanently engaged, and W4R-D3N will be nearly impossible to destroy.
W4R-D3N's weak spot is the red eye. Players using a sniper rifle will find this an easy target to score a number of guaranteed critical hits during each cycle of shield down-time . Scoring critical hits while W4R-D3N's shield is still on will not interrupt the digistruct process.
Shock weapons are recommended for maximum effectiveness against W4R-D3N's shields, and then corrosive weapons once the shields are depleted. Doing this, W4R-D3N can be dispatched with minimal trouble. W4R-D3N'S shields have a very low recharge delay and high recharge rate, so damage over time effects can assist in preventing the shield from recharging. Explosive weapons employed against W4R-D3N also offer a serviceable damage source against both its shielded and non-shielded iterations.
W4R-D3N should be given top priority, while using the loaders it digistructs to get second winds, or it will spawn even more loaders. A lone surveyor may also appear early in the fight which must be taken down as it'll restore W4R-D3N's shield or repair it.
The Shrine of the Gunbringer behind W4R-D3N makes an excellent hiding spot as the loaders will rarely venture around W4R-D3N and it can only harm characters by using a shockwave attack which can easily be avoided by stepping back.
For those having significant trouble defeating W4R-D3N on their first playthrough, where corrosive weapons are not readily available, leveling to approximately 13-15 and equipping a Turtle Shield, as well as a fairly powerful shotgun and/or rocket launcher, is a potential strategy for defeating it quickly. Immediately running up to the eye and attacking with a shotgun to destroy its shield and then following up with a rocket launcher with at least 1000+ damage per shot will quickly take the boss down. While the turtle shield should prevent one from being downed, the rocket launcher can also be used to quickly destroy a loader to exit Fight for Your Life mode.
W4R-D3N can be defeated during its first appearance at Bloodshot Ramparts, however this is timed. If it is not destroyed in time, it will escape and take Roland to Friendship Gulag. This can be avoided by force closing the game and starting over again as Vault Hunters will now spawn at the one way fast travel station without having to fight though the numerous bandits and loaders.
If it escapes the Bloodshot Ramparts, W4R-D3N will be found at the far end of Friendship Gulag. The path to W4R-D3N is full of loaders, including Badass varieties, and also human personnel. Once a path is cleared and W4R-D3N approached, it will start spawning more loaders, sometimes spawning a Badass version. The loaders must be dispatched quickly or they will quickly make an already tough boss fight overwhelming.
- When W4R-D3N first seizes Roland at the end of the Bloodshot Stronghold, if the player is fast enough, they can attack W4R-D3N. However, it cannot be killed here. It will take damage down to 1 HP but cannot be reduced further.
- W4R-D3N is a rewording of 'Warden' who ensures the smooth operation of their prison. Much like W4R-D3N where it takes Roland to the Friendship Gulag if not stopped prematurely.
