The Invincible Son of Crawmerax the Invincible (hereafter referred to simply as 'Son of Crawmerax', or 'The Son') is a raid boss in Borderlands 2 DLC pack: Sir Hammerlock vs. the Son of Crawmerax. He is created after the original raid boss from Borderlands, Crawmerax the Invincible.

Involvement

The Invincible Son of Crawmerax the Invincible is the final boss featured in the fifth Headhunter DLC, Sir Hammerlock vs. the Son of Crawmerax, for Borderlands 2. Once the main mission of the DLC is completed, as well the following side mission, Vault Hunters may return to The Deep, pay 20 Eridium, and fight The Invincible Son of Crawmerax the Invincible.

Appearances

Strategy

The Son has a rather high amount of health and three very powerful attacks. The first is a claw attack that will put a Vault Hunter very close to Fight For Your Life; the second, a volley of corrosive orbs with a small splash radius in a quick succession, which can be dodged at long ranges; and the third, a dive into the ground and back up, doing damage in an area symbolized by a purple circle as well as knocking the Vault Hunter airborne. A final move that he uses is not a damaging one: when his health is low enough, he will glow white and dive into the ground for a period of time, regaining some health. He can do this a total of three times - at about 70%, 40%, and 25% health.

The most difficult part of the fight when trying to solo him is the beginning, because there are no enemies available for Second Winds until after he dives into the ground to regain health for the first time. A good approach during this phase is to get close to the boss as quickly as possible, then strafe him constantly while sticking close to him. If this is done right, it becomes very hard for the boss to land a hit. Even if he does, in most cases he will only hit once (sometimes twice) before rising high up in the air and roaring, exposing himself for a few seconds. This is an opportunity to either heal or move to in front of him to land critical hits. He will also constantly try to run away to regain distance. For melee-focused characters, sometimes it could actually be hard for them to utilize roid damage if they keep sticking close to the boss and circling him, because they will not get hit very often. One way around this is to shoot at his shell and take damage from the reflected bullets. Even though risky, doing this enables Krieg to use Release the Beast constantly.

Once the second phase of the fight starts, other enemies will spawn continuously, providing an infinite source of Second Winds. These enemies consist of craboids and varkids, and a powerful shot from a launcher will easily take them out. As the boss's health goes down, however, there will be more varkids and they will morph more frequently, resulting in a greater number of tougher enemies, including Varkid Incinerators, Varkid Electrocutioners, Varkid Disintegrators, Badass Varkids, and even Ultimate Badass Varkids. The Son's corrosive orbs can be dodged more easily by sprinting either in the opposite direction, or in the same direction as they approach. After the Son dives underground and regenerates health for the second time, he will start using another attack, which is spewing a stream of corrosive liquid in an area in front of him, but this attack does not deal heavy damage. Staying too close to the Son makes him use the diving attack more frequently. Otherwise, he will do the diving attack after shooting corrosive orbs and/or doing the claw attack a few times.

The Son has four critical spots, which are four glowing purple orbs on his chest and behind his arms. It is possible to remove his claws when dealing enough damage to these points. The Son has little to no resistance to shock, and non-elemental damage works fine against him. He heavily resists corrosive, explosive, and slag. Slag effect also wears off very quickly against him. While his underbelly takes less Corrosive damage than his shelled backside, it is vulnerable to fire. His shell can also deflect bullets, possibly sending them back at the shooter, therefore shooting at his shell at close range is fairly dangerous. The skill B0re allows Zer0's bullets to bypass this deflection. Special projectiles that are considered rockets, such as those fired by Logan's Gun or the KerBlaster, are not deflected. The Son resists damage done by Logan's Gun, however, despite the damage being incendiary.

Like when fighting most raid bosses, some form of quick health regen is recommended throughout the fight. With the Grog Nozzle or Rubi in hand, several means can be employed for this purpose: shooting the Unkempt Harold then quickly swapping to either of the aforementioned guns, throwing a grenade such as the Quasar, Chain Lightning, Storm Front, or Bonus Package. The Flame of the Firehawk can prove very useful during the second phase of the fight, due to a large amount of enemies present.

With Light the Fuse, Krieg can have an easy time against this boss in solo play. The Law and Order (or an Evisceration Grog Nozzle or Rubi combined with a good Roid shield) will help him survive the first phase of the fight. During the second phase, since weak enemies spawn continuously, whenever Krieg is down, even if he does nothing during Fight For Your Life, his last explosion will most likely kill several enemies and revive him. With Release the Beast, a Tasty or Flesh Crunch class mod, and some investment in explosive damage and damage reduction, Krieg becomes nigh unstoppable once the minions begin to spawn.

The small vents on the ground will shoot out ammo and health from time to time, but only do so when the Vault Hunter gets close to them.

Once defeated, the Son of Crawmerax drops a bunch of loot, including skins, heads, Eridium, and possibly legendaries.

Notes

  • All of his attacks are very similar to those of his father, Crawmerax the Invincible.
  • The Son of Crawmerax only becomes a true raid boss if fought again after the main mission is completed. He will be three levels higher than the Vault Hunter, and the varkids will morph almost constantly from the moment they begin to spawn. Only the raid boss version drops a significant amount of loot.
  • The second treasure chamber is only accessible after defeating the raid boss version of the Son. In this chamber, there are two chests hidden behind the waterfall.
  • Entering The Invincible Son of Crawmerax the Invincible's arena costs 20 Eridium.
  • Sometimes the Son can become stuck underground when he is regenerating. He might reappear after a very long time, or might not reappear at all.
  • It is also possible for the Son to become stuck (above ground) if there are varkids or craboids too close to him right in front of his underbelly. This usually happens when two enemies run into each other in opposite directions. He will stop moving and stay immobile until his health is low enough to trigger him to dive underground and regenerate.
  • On rare occasions, the minions will begin to spawn right at the beginning of the fight.
  • If a Vault Hunter is down too close to the boss, they might become "stuck" inside his hitbox. When this happens, their movement during Fight For Your Life is hampered, and their attacks will be blocked by the boss's hitbox. Getting a Second Wind becomes extremely difficult as a result.
