- The name and special effect is a reference to the nickname for a mobster, and the "Tommy guns" with large drum magazines used by mobsters in the '30s.
- The name Thanatos is the personification of death in Greek mythology. Sigmund Freud also termed the destructive instinct in humans Thanatos, as opposed to that of pleasure, Eros.
- It is mispelled as "Vanatos" in the BradyGames Borderlands Guide, but is spelled correctly in the S&S Munitions section of the guide.Template:Orange pistols
- Big tony saying "Hi" is a referance to older italian buisness meaning when somone means to kill somone via a visit they send the other persons regards. For example the boss's name is big tony thusly the person killing the man would say "Big tony says hi".
