Stop-Gap is a legendary shield in Borderlands 3 manufactured by Hyperion. It is obtained randomly from any suitable loot source but has an increased chance to drop from El Dragón Jr. located in Jakobs Estate on Eden-6.

Special Effects

The process is called "living". – When depleted, the character is immune to damage for 5 seconds. Always has a recharge delay of 5.5 seconds or longer.

Usage & Description

The Stop-Gap is a defense-oriented shield designed to give the user a five-second opportunity to escape from danger, or proc skills that would be effective during the invincibility, such as health regeneration skills. Given that the shield has a long recharge delay and cooldown for its invincibility, the user can find themselves completely vulnerable if they are unable to get to cover after the immunity ends.

With the combination of skills or items that speed up shield regeneration or grant additional invulnerability, the user can be almost unkillable for lengthy periods of time.

  • The effect does not trigger if the user is downed by the same attack which breaks their shield, making this significantly less useful when paired with the Deathless Artifact or skills which reduce maximum health.
  • The "On Action Skill Start - Activate any effects that trigger on shield break or fill." Anointment combined with action skills with a short recharge such as FL4K's Rakk Attack! or Zane's MNTIS Shoulder Cannon allows the character to become practically invulnerable. However, if an action skill is activated before the 5 seconds of invulnerability finishes, then the 5 seconds of invulnerability is not increased, resulting in nothing happening. It must be used after the 5 seconds, when the character is damageable again, to receive another 5 seconds of invulnerability.

  • The flavor text is a quote from Terry Pratchett's novel The Last Continent, where it is the personification of Death's response to being asked if it's true that your life flashes before your eyes before you die, as in, your entire life is the flash before death.
