Borderlands 4 features two types of shields: energy, which return from previous games, and armor, a new type of shield.

  • S Armor Armor Shields have multiple segments that can be restored by picking up Armor Segments from killed enemies. They refill continuously, but at a regeneration rate slower than Energy Shields.
  • S Energy Energy Shields only refill when the playable character is not taking damage, but at a higher rate than Armor Shields.

Naming Conventions[]

Common shields are named thematically by the manufacturer.

  • Daedalus shields are named after military fortifications, like Foxhole and Pillbox.
  • Jakobs shields are named after measurements used for beer, for example Hogshead and Stein.
  • Maliwan shields are named after castle architectural elements, as in Gate and Stanchion.
  • Order shields are named after alchemical terminology. Examples are Alembic and Bezoar.
  • Ripper shields are named after the visible effects of a skin injury. See Callus and Scar.
  • Tediore shields are named after kinds of outer layer applications. Some examples are Casing and Laminate.
  • Torgue shields are named after slang terms for condoms, such as Jimmy Cap and Rubber.
