Swarms of Rakks emerge from the back of these massive monsters. The backs of these Hives can be seen throughout Pandora, half-buried in the sand. Rakks fly from their back when approached. The Rakk Hives are the most dormant of the indigenous species of Pandora, not emerging from their hibernation until after most of the other species. The player encounters one as it wakes on their way to retrieving a piece of the Vault Key.

Throughout the battle, the Hive will shake its back to release a swarm of Rakks from its back to defend itself from the players. These are either white Defender Rakk or yellowish Kamikaze Rakk. These are unique to the battle with the Rakk Hive. Defender Rakk behave just like most other Rakk in the game, flocking together and divebombing the player until they are killed. Kamikaze Rakk are smaller and behave in a similar way, but rather than striking the player they instead explode, killing themselves and dealing damage. They will also explode when shot.

Due to the large amount of Rakks that frequently spawn, it is possible to get easy Second Wind Kills and thus, stay alive for the whole fight. Inside the Rakk Hive's Encounter Area is a tent containing some lockers and chests full of ammunition, if you find yourself running low during the fight.
