Throughout the battle, the Hive will shake its back to release a swarm of [[Rakk|Rakks]] from its back to defend itself from the players. These are either white Defender Rakk or yellowish Kamikaze Rakk. These are unique to the battle with the Rakk Hive. Defender Rakk behave just like most other Rakk in the game, flocking together and divebombing the player until they are killed. Kamikaze Rakk are smaller and behave in a similar way, but rather than striking the player they instead explode, killing themselves and dealing damage. They will also explode when shot.

RakkHive

A Rakk Hive

The Rakk Hive is a gigantic alien creature with holes on its back that release swarms of Rakks. This was the first boss revealed for the game.

Swarms of Rakks emerge from the back of these massive monsters. The backs of these Hives can be seen throughout Pandora, half-buried in the sand. Rakks fly from their back when approached. The Rakk Hives are the most dormant of the indigenous species of Pandora, not emerging from their hibernation until after most of the other species. The player encounters one as it wakes on their way to retrieving a piece of the Vault Key.

Combat

The Rakk Hive moves very slowly, so keeping your distance is fairly easy, as well as highly recommended due to its powerful stomping attack. It can also spit explosive balls of corrosive acid at the player.

The player can also simply stand on the nearby hill, where the player will be protected from the stomp, but very vulnerable to the explosive balls attack and the Rakks the Hive will spawn.

Throughout the battle, the Hive will shake its back to release a swarm of Rakks from the holes on it's back to attack.

Due to the large amount of Rakks that frequently spawn, it is possible to get easy Second Wind Kills and thus, stay alive for the whole fight. Inside the Rakk Hive's Encounter Area is a tent containing some lockers and chests full of ammunition, if you find yourself running low during the fight.

The Rakk Hive's weak spots are its glowing, orb-like eyes. After the eyes rupture and explode, the crater they leave is also a weak spot. Shots to the eye or eye-hole both deal critical damage. Criticals can also be achieved by firing directly into the mouth like orifice.

Rumors

Due to the ability to obtain the Rider sniper rifle only during this quest, it has been rumored that by using the weapon to "shoot the eyes out" with the Rider while fighting the Rakk Hive will unlock an easter egg. This rumor has been debunked as false and untrue.

Trivia

  • The Rakk Hive bares a resemblance to a species of Blue found in the Anime series Blue Gender.
  • Little has changed in the Rakk Hive's appearance from the original verison of Borderlands prior to change in art direction.
  • The Rakk Hive will continue to breathe after being defeated and its organs can be seen still moving through the gaping hole that appears in its side.
  • If a player persists in shooting one of the four critical eyes for a prolonged period, it will burst. After the eye has been destroyed, it yields zero damage when shot.
  • Unlike other dead enemies, the Rakk Hive remains "solid" when killed, allowing the player to climb the carcass, allowing a better look at the gaping hole in it's side.
