Mayhem Mode

Pre-Mayhem 2.0 UI

Mayhem Mode is a game mode introduced in Borderlands 3. Mayhem Mode can be activated upon the completion of the main story of the game, or at any time in Vault Hunter mode.

Upon said completion, Vault Hunters are now able to interact with a mysterious Eridian terminal aboard Sanctuary III, enabling Mayhem Mode that allows for up to 10 different levels to choose from. Taking on one of these modes ups the ante on risks and rewards across all worlds: Enemies get increased health, shields, and armor, in exchange for bonus cash, Eridium, experience points, and the drop amount and quality of loot.

Originally, Mayhem Mode had only 4 levels and the modifiers were chosen at random each time a new area was loaded. The April 23, 2020 overhaul, known as Mayhem 2.0,[1] made significant changes to the modifier system as well as drastically increased the difficulty of enemies.

Mayhem 2.0 Levels

MayhemMode UI

Mayhem 2.0 Mode menu, displaying information, and customization options

Once enabled, Mayhem Mode determines a random selection of modifiers for each Mayhem level. With each level, the difficulty of the modifiers increases (from Easy to Very Hard) and the amount increases (from 1 to 4). Modifiers are separate for each level and can be rerolled at any time via the Mayhem menu tab. Rerolling one level will reroll the entire pool across all levels. Modifiers will remain permanent for each character's save file until they are changed. Changing levels will not reroll the modifiers. Rerolling or changing levels requires reloading of the area if not aboard Sanctuary III.

As with the original Mayhem mode, each increasing level will see enemies' health, shields, and armor increase accordingly. Enemies' damage to players is not increased. This can lead to some disparity between player-to-enemy damage ratios, which makes certain effects (such as damage reflection) deal negligible amounts of damage.
