Mayhem Mode is a game mode introduced in Borderlands 3. Mayhem Mode can be activated upon the completion of the main story of the game.
Characters are taken to a mysterious terminal aboard Sanctuary III that can enable four difficulty levels, from one through four. Taking on one of these Mayhem Modes ups the ante on risks and rewards across all worlds: Enemies get increased health, shields, and armor, in exchange for bonus cash, Eridium, experience points, and chances for better loot.
Mayhem Mode applies Mayhem Mods to any planet visited and can require new playstyles to be adapted in response to a random selection of modifiers. Modifiers for the current map may be viewed through the map screen.
Announced on April 21, 2020, and officially released to clients on April 23, 2020, Mayhem Mode received an overhaul, known as Mayhem 2.0.[1] This update changed several gameplay mechanisms when playing with Mayhem Mode enabled, and replacing the entire old existing system.
Mayhem Modifications post-Mayhem 2.0 are determined when a character enters a new area for the first time. Traveling back to an area you have left does not change the mods applied to that area. One can change the Mayhem Level at any point via menu, but doing so will start an area refresh.
The Mayhem 2.0 update allows for an easier method of customization, an improved data display for the Vault Hunter to read and process the information instead of the original text menu, and to choose between 10 different levels. If not satisfied with the selected modifiers, one can simply "Reroll" and be subjected to a new random number generator for which modifiers are selected (see right-side image for reference).[2]
Each of the Mayhem Levels will select one, none, or more of the following 4 difficulty tiers: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Very Hard.
In addition, each level will increase the durability of enemies (shields, armor, and health), while in exchange increasing the total amount of rewards given (experience, currency, and loot).
The intensity of each modifier is dependent on which Mayhem Level is selected.
For the sake of keeping information clear and understandable to the reader, some effects had their description rearranged, such as removing flavor text, or grammatical structure checks. Their name, however, is kept untouched.
