Malak's Bane is a legendary sniper rifle in Borderlands 3 manufactured by Dahl. It is obtained randomly from any suitable loot source, but has an increased chance to drop from Phoenix located in The Splinterlands on Pandora.

Special Weapon Effects

Welcome to the end. – Always Cryo or Incendiary. Shoots a slow projectile that consumes 2 ammo per shot. Shots bounce twice and penetrates enemies. Alternative firing mode is a shotgun that fires five projectiles and draws from the same magazine as the main fire mode.

Usage & Description

Despite being a Dahl weapon, the Malak's Bane functions more like a mix between Maliwan and Vladof weapons, as it deals the respectable damage-over-time of Maliwan, and possesses two firing styles like Vladof. Because of this, the Malak's Bane's main draw is its versatility at both close and long ranges due to its firing modes.

While it appears effective on paper, the weapon's main downsides are similar to E-Tech sniper rifles in Borderlands 2. This includes a high ammo burn, as each shot costs 2 ammo per shot on a weapon category that has limited maximum ammo (sniper rifles). Additionally, it is ineffective as a sniper rifle due to its low bullet speed making it ironically difficult to use at long range, while most of its damage also comes from elemental damage-over-time. Its shotgun mode is more effective for general combat, but it is still limited to a sniper rifle's small ammunition pool.

Overall, the Malak's Bane is heavily outclassed by most sniper rifles from a damage and utility standpoint, and is usually considered one of the most ineffective legendary weapons in the game.

Notes

  • Prior to the Febuary 28, 2020 hotfix, the shotgun mode used to cost 5 ammo per shot, which resulted in frequent reloads and could drain reserves quickly.
