For the Lunatic in True Vault Hunter Mode from Borderlands 2, see Psycho (Borderlands 2).

Lunatics wield what appear to be a laser cutting saw scavs that frequent scav camps in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. They are primarily melee attackers and never carry guns, relying on the accuracy of their buzz-axe throws for long-range combat.

Strategy

Lunatics run erratically into melee range in order to flay their targets with the buzz-axes they wield. However, if a Lunatic cannot reach his target, he will instead throw his buzz-axe with near pinpoint accuracy. This attack is also occasionally performed in normal combat.

When at a distance from their targets, Lunatics commonly use leap attacks to get in close whilst simultaneously harming and knocking back their targets. They are also capable of using powerful slam attacks identical to the slams Vault Hunters can perform using their Oz kits.

It can be difficult to perform critical hits on Lunatics, due to their erratic movement and frequent dodging. However, scoring a critical hit can pop their oxygen bubble, causing them to be briefly stunned and suffocate until the bubble recharges. cryo damage and slams are also effective, as they can be frozen and knocked back, respectively.

In addition to normal Lunatics, there are Lil' Lunatics, which are short Lunatics featuring less health and weaker attacks than full-sized Lunatics and Badass Lunatics / Badass Lil' Lunatics, which boast dramatically increased damage and health than the lesser Lunatics. Both Badass and Lil' Badass Lunatics are identifiable by their dual-wielding of two buzz-axes that let off shock sparks. While Badass Lunatics' buzz axes let off sparks, they are incapable of causing shock damage.

Another variant is the Suicidal Lunatic.

Notes

  • The Lunatics that spawned within Regolith Range were temporarily replaced with Pumpkin Lunatics during the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel 2014 Halloween celebration. They behaved identically to Lunatics, but featured jack-o-lanterns as heads.
  • Lunatics are renamed Moonstrucks in True Vault Hunter Mode, and Elpisians in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode.
