Guardian Cheru are Guardian enemies encountered in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. They are the most common type of staff wielding Eridian Guardian.

Involvement

Guardian Cheru are first encountered during the mission Beginning of the End at Solitude's Edge, the Lost Legion stronghold in Vorago Solitude. They also later appear in Outfall Pumping Station, Tycho's Ribs, Eleseer and The Holodome Onslaught DLC

Appearances

Strategy

Guardian Cheru are agile, acrobatic enemies. This is most exemplified by their jumps, dodges and many of their attacks involving various degrees of flipping and/or spinning. Whilst Guardian Cheru are fast, Vault Hunters can still outrun them by sprinting. As with most ground-based enemies, they are capable of leaping great distances.

Guardian Cheru tend to try to be at close-to-mid range from their targeted Vault Hunter. At close range they tend to swipe with their staff to cause direct damage, or slam the ground with their staff to produce a shockwave that results in a small amount of knockback. At mid range their attacks involve thrusting their staff forward, shooting out a blast of energy, or using the energy from their staff to throw energy 'discs'. Their ranged attacks can be dodged relatively easily, as they possess no homing capabilities.

They have substantially more shield capacity in comparison to their low health. Shock damage is extremely effective, including against their health due to the low capacity (though still not as effective as fire against their health). Cryo damage can freeze Guardian Cheru in place to make them an easier target, however as with all shielded enemies, they are slightly resistant to the effect until their shields are depleted.

Notes

  • In True Vault Hunter Mode, they are renamed Warden Cheru, and in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, they are renamed Fallen Cheru.
  • A Guardian Cheru is used to represent the entire Guardian species within a title card that reads Guardians, Defenders of the Vault, introducing them as an enemy type upon entering the Lost Legion complex at Solitude's Edge in Vorago Solitude.
    • Guardians are the only enemy type to collectively receive a title introduction during Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! All other title cards in the game introduce either non-player characters or boss encounters.
  • It is possible to encounter Guardian Cheru, Guardian Wraiths, Guardian Spectres and Guardian Reapers before the Guardians' title card appears during the story. There are several Guardian teleporters found throughout Vorago Solitude, and even before the title card there is a high chance that they will spawn Guardians when approached.
  • Any Guardians, including Guardian Cheru, spawned by the Opha Superior will automatically die upon the death of the Opha Superior.
  • During the fight against the Sentinel, Guardian Cheru begin spawning in pairs periodically after defeating the Sentinel's first phase. Upon the defeat of the Sentinel's final phase, any Guardian Cheru still active in the arena will automatically die before the Empyrean Sentinel appears. However, during the fight against the Invincible Sentinel, not only do they begin to spawn at the start of the fight, they will also remain active and keep spawning until the defeat of the Invincible Empyrean Sentinel.

Trivia

  • The "Cheru" name is in reference to the Cherub Angel from Christianity.
  • In the game files of the original Borderlands were unused models and animations for a Guardian type named "Cherub". This same model would later be modified and become Putti in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!, while the Cherub inspired name would be used for the Guardian Cheru.
