For the grinder in Borderlands 2, see The Overlooked: Shields Up.

The Grinder is a device located in Janey Springs's workshop in Concordia, and is usable after completing the mission Grinders for Springs. The Grinder consumes three weapons or items fed to it and produces a new random weapon as a result.

The items fed to the grinder must conform to a recipe which determines the type and quality of the output. A recipe defines a combination of item types and rarities taken as input and what rarity and type the resulting output may be.

The level requirement of the produced item is the average of the level requirements of the input items, rounded down.

Moonstone-assisted grinds significantly increase the chances of an optimal result, and may also result in Luneshine bonuses.

  • Any class mod produced will always be of the type usable by the current character.
  • As of the 1.0.2 update, it is possible to obtain the Excalibastard from a Grinder recipe.
  • A Compatibility Pack released on November 11th, 2014 added the ability to grind three purple items together, and added recipes for legendary grenade mods, shields, and Oz kits, as well as an extra legendary weapon recipe. Next Compatibility Pack released on January 27, 2015 also permitted players to perform Moonstone grind of purple items, though it was buggy at the time of release and could crash of freeze the game sometimes.
