The Golden Key is an item which unlocks the Golden Chest in Sanctuary. This chest contains weapons of purple or magenta rarity, and relics may be blue or purple. All loot is scaled to the player whom opened the chest at the time. Golden Keys are single use, impossible to trade, and are not dropped as part of loot in Borderlands 2.

Ways to get Golden Keys

Issues

  • The number of keys assigned to each player is stored in profile.bin, and all keys are lost upon deletion of this file. Profile.bin is currently not backed up to the Steam Cloud, so users who uninstall Borderlands 2 without first backing up their profile lose their keys. 2K and Gearbox currently do not replace lost keys, but say they are working on the problem. This is for (PC) only in case some of you are wondering.

Bugs

  • Upon the released of Borderlands 2, PC users were able to add infinite amounts of keys to their account. Gearbox has since patched this exploit.
