Background

Shane once served in the Dahl military under the command of Axton's wife, but even though they were under the same superior, Axton and Shane never actually met face to face. During his post on Themis, Atlas suddenly launched an attack on the entire planet. Under the command of Commander Veylaz, the Crimson Lance ruthlessly eliminated all the Dahl soldiers posted on the planet. Shane was the only one to survive, but was left critically injured. With his last bit of strength, he swore to Veylaz that he would hunt him down and kill him, before passing out from blood loss.

After the incident, Shane managed to recover enough to leave the planet and head to Isolus, where a Dahl battalion was stationed and recieved medical care, after which he continued to serve under Sarah's command, but becoming more defiant toward his orders, secretly planning to strike back at Atlas and Commander Veylaz for wiping out his company.

Two years later, Shane found Veylaz on an Atlas moonbase orbiting Aegis Eight, and immediately set out to kill him, landing loudly in the space station and wiping out every single Crimson Lanceman in the entire station before moving to Veylaz, brutally torturing him to death before planting explosives on the main reactor core and destroying the entire station. After his mission, he was reprimanded by Sarah for ignoring his orders and pursuing his own mission. He was court martialed shortly afterwards, and dishonorably discharged from the military, after which he became a mercenary for hire, taking jobs for many undesirables around the galaxy.

It was during one of these missions that he caught wind of The Vault on Pandora. Lured by the promise of guns and cash, he abandoned his mission and set off to Pandora, where be quickly built up a reputation as a dangerous soldier by local residents, and a "psychotic bandit" by Hyperion, after he destroyed an Eridium plant on Jakob's Cove, which placed the bounty on his head at $26 trillion, which was tripled after he eliminated an elite assassin hit squad sent by Handsome Jack.

Shane always carries twin customized handguns Freedom and Justice, two extremely powerful weapons that are able to decimate any enemy, firing powerful universal rounds that are extremely effective against all enemies, as well as his black double edged white bladed energy sword, Armature.

He has expressly stated that he is only helping to defeat Handsome Jack and save the entire universe as we know it because he wants money and guns.

Appearance

Shane is a 22 year old caucasian male with somewhat unkempt jet black hair and has hazel eyes. He is around 5'8" in height and is about 120 lbs. His main attire consists of a white button up long sleeve shirt covering a light bullet resistant vest, and a long black overcoat reaching down to his knees as well as black fingerless gloves.

Skills

Shane's skills focus on making him an assault and support gunner for himself or team mates. That said, he works well both alone and in a team. He is skilled in non elemental weaponry and his specialty weapon types are assault rifles and submachine guns, and he has skills that benefit both of those classes.

Blaze Quadrotor

Action Skill: Shane deploys an aerial quadrotor platform with a minigun to follow him around and fire at enemies around him, or fire at a specific target. Upgraded, the Blaze Quadrotor can have a second minigun and fire explosive rounds and launch satellite strikes.

Base cooldown is 60 seconds.

Support

The Support skill tree focuses mainly on supporting team mates, or keeping Shane armed and ready to fight, as well as focusing on increasing the Blaze Quadrotor's combat effectiveness as a tool used for heavy enemy suppression.

Bullet Storm	2	5	Kill skill. Reduces recoil and increases fire rate and damage by 15% per level. Can stack up to 10 times.
Friend of Friends	3	5	Increases all combat stats by 10% per level depending on how many allies are in the party (Including self).
High Velocity	3	5	Increases bullet velocity by 10% per level.
Extra Ordnance	3	1	Adds homing missile pods to the Blaze Quadrotor, launching 50 homing missiles per volley every 10 seconds. These missiles can go over cover or through tight spaces to hit their targets.
Combat Adaptive	4	5	Increases combat effectiveness with all weapon types by 5% per level.
Support Gunner	4	5	Gives +2 team ammo regeneration per level.
UAGP-123 Blaze	5	1	Adds a second minigun to the Quadrotor and they both fire explosive rounds, doubles health.

Assault

The Assault skill tree mainly focuses on drastically improving proficiency with automatic weapons, as well as dealing as much damage as possible at all ranges.

Cold Hard Lead	2	5	Increases damage with non-elemental weapons by 10% per level.
Ammo Hoarder	3	5	Increases maximum ammo capacity for all weapons by 5% per level. 10% per level with assault rifles and submachine guns.
Move Up	3	5	Increases movement speed while aiming down sights by 5% per level.
Futuristic Weaponry	3	1	All E-Tech weapons gain a bonus to all stats, and only use one bullet every shot.
Lucky Number	4	5	Every 123rd shot fired by any weapon will deal extremely high amp damage at no shield cost. Increases damage per level.
Redeploy	4	5	Decreases Blaze Turret cooldown by 5% per level.
Satellite Strike	5	1	Blaze Quadrotor can call in a satellite strike to destroy high priority targets. Activated by pressing the Action Skill button while the quadrotor is deployed. The strike will be targeted at what you reticule is aimed at. Can only be used once per deploy.

Survival

The Survival skill tree focuses on keeping Shane in the fight for as long as possible.

Unbreakable	2	5	Increases health and shield capacity by 10% per level.
Die Hard	2	5	Increases Fight For Your Life time by 10% per level, and increases gun damage by 5% per level while in Fight For Your Life.
Retaliate	3	5	Bullets have a chance to bounce off your shield, mitigating damage taken by 50%, and hit the enemy that fired it causing double damage. 5% chance per level.
Walk It Off	3	5	Increases amount of health restored after Fight For Your Life. Also gives resistance to all forms of damage for 5 seconds. 10% health increase and damage resistance per level.
Backlash Shield	3	1	Gives Shane an impenetrable bubble shield that ricochets enemy fire back at them for double damage every time the Blaze Quadrotor is deployed.
Heat Up	4	5	Increased combat effectiveness proportionate to how many times damage has been taken, and the amount of damage sustained. Can stack infinitely.
One Man Army	4	5	Combat effectiveness increases proportionally to how many enemies are present at one time. Up to 500% at maximum level.
Final Fight	5	1	Use the action skill during Fight For Your Life to recieve a second wind and bring out Freedom and Justice to use against your enemies. If killed during Final Fight, it is an instant death.

[Explosion, followed by a door being kicked in. A few gunshots and a struggle are heard]

Veylaz: Agh! Shit!

Shane: It's meeeee!

Veylaz: Hey! You can't- agh!

(Brief struggle, follower by a gunshot)

Veylaz: AGH! My arm!

Shane: It's. Me.

Veylaz: Wait... I... you're that Dahl soldier from Themis! During Operation Iron Hand!

Shane: Yeah, that's right. Rmember what happened that day?

(Struggle. Machinery whirring and bone crunching with blood splattering)

Veylaz: AAAGH! MY ARM! MY ARM! AAAGH!

Shane: You sure massacred my buddies. Almost killed me, too. It was pretty hardcore.

Veylaz: Ngh... how did you survive?! I had a cleanup crew wipe that entire area clean!

Shane: Not entirely.

Veylaz: Hey, hey, wait, what're you doing?!

Shane: (In a much darker tone) How about you at least make the attempt to die gracefully?

Veylaz: Wait, wait, no, don't!

(Gunshot, followed by a body hitting the floor)

Shane: Heh...

Soldiers: Hey! There he is!

Shane: (Back to lighthearted tone) Uh-oh. Woops.

(Gunshots, before ECHO recording ends)

Jack: ...Wow.

Shane: Hello!

Sarah: What the hell were you thinking, Shane?

Shane: Huh?

Sarah: Disrespecting orders? Leaving your company? Blowing up an Atlas space station? They could trace you back to us, you know! If they find out it was one of ours they'll put even more force on us!

Shane: Oh, yeah, that.

Sarah: "Oh, yeah, that."?! You understand you could've compromised our entire operation against Atlas?!

Shane: Oh, sure.

Sarah: Then why the hell would you do that?!

Shane: (Darker tone) You really think I'd let that bastard live after what he did?

Sarah: We had plans to have him eliminated in a more discreet manner than blowing up an entire military compound, Hale.

Shane: Wouldn't have given me the satisfaction of watching the life slowly drain way from his eyes... that fear for his life I saw... it was absolutely exquisite...

(Momentary silence)

Sarah: (Sigh) I've filed for your discharge from the military. We can't have you here anymore. You're too much of a risk now.

Shane: (Lighthearted tone) Aw, dammit! And it's taco night, too!

[ECHO ends]

Angel: I believe after he left the Dahl military, Shane was responsible for bringing down most of the Atlas Corporation after Commandant Steele and General Knoxx were killed. He's the reason why they couldn't get back into business afterwards.

Jack: What'd he do? Just kill off the remaining higher-ups?

Angel: He killed approximately 82% of the remaining Crimson Lance forces who didn't desert and/or join the Crimson Raiders, as well as taking out the CEO and all his officials after General Knoxx.

Jack: Well, damn. And you said he's already on Pandora?

Angel: Yes.

Jack: Well we'll have to keep an eye on him.

ECHO #3

Jack: Angel.

Angel: Um... yes, Jack?

Jack: We have a problem.

Angel: What is it?

Jack: That mercenary you told me about. The one that took out that Atlas moonbase?

Angel: Shane? What about him.

Jack: HE JUST BLEW UP THE ERIDIUM PLANT WE HAVE IN JAKOB'S COVE!

Angel: What?

Jack: How the hell did he do it? That place was a damn fortress!

Angel: W-well he is known for his... uh... ability to do things like that. He did destroy that moonbase after all.

Jack: I want a bounty place on him, right now! Set it to the highest number that comes to your mind! I want everybody on this goddamn planet out to kill him!

[Beeping. ECHO ends]

Shane: I think he's angry.

ECHO #4

Angel: Uh... Jack? We, um... we have a problem.

Jack: Gah, what is it now?

Angel: Shane Hale. He, uh... well just listen.

[ECHO plays. Energy blade sounds are heard. Shortly after, a momentary silence before two beeps]

Shane: Hello.

Jack: Who's this?

Shane: Carmen Sandiego.

Jack: Funny.

Shane: Did you send those assassin guys after me?

Jack: Wait... you're Hale? You took out those assassins?

Shane: Uhuh.

Jack: Those were the best assassins in the galaxy! How the hell did you-

Shane: The best? Really? It wasn't really that hard to kill them... I mean, all I had to do was shoot them a whole bunch until they stopped moving.

Jack: That's-

Shane: Yeah, well, anyway, I'm gonna go, now. Please send more assassins, they're really fun to shoot.

[ECHO transmission ends]

(Momentary silence)

Jack: Triple his bounty.

Shane: Hello!

Moxxi: Hey there, sweetheart. Haven't seen you around before. Mind telling a lady your name?

Shane: Shane Hale.

Moxxi: Shane... Hale? Ah, so you're the stud I've been hearing so much about over the ECHO. Got Jack all excited and ready to blow.

Shane: Uh... is that... um...

Moxxi: Yeah, sorry, I do that sometimes.

Shane: Uh. Okay?

Moxxi: So, what brings you to Sanctuary, sweetheart?

Shane: I kinda just wandered in.

Moxxi: The Crimson Raiders. Here, we're the last hope Pandora has at stopping Handsome Jack from completely destroying the planet.

Shane: Oh. Well I don't really care about that.

Moxxi: What do you mean?

Shane: I just want money and guns. Just money and guns. And things to shoot at. That's important too. For the guns. And the money is for pizza. And tacos. And other things, too, I guess... ammo?

Moxxi: Well, sweetie, if you join the Crimson Raiders, you can get all the money and guns you can handle.

Shane: I don't know, I can handle a fuckton of money and guns.

Moxxi: Give it some thought, at least. We could use someone of your talents.

Shane: Okay.

Shane is one of the few characters who have confirmed last names.
Shane is friends with Moxxi, as he commonly visits her at her bar wherever it may be.
Shane's Backlash Shield ability is based on the Backlash Grenade in Resistance: Fall of Man.
Shane's favorite color is white.
Shane has a sort of split personality, most of the time being lighthearted and carefree, but sometimes taking on a much more sinister and sadistic tone. However, he has stated that he just happens to be lightheartedly sadistic, instead of having actual split personality disorder.
Despite referencing buying drinks or having someone else buy drinks sometimes, Shane doesn't actually drink alcoholic beverages.
