Every equipped item with the same Firmware increases their effects, to a maximum of three. Equipping an item with a fourth or fifth instance of the same firmware gives no additional benefits.
The lock icon indicates that this firmware was transferred once and can't be transferred again.
When the game's main missions are completed, a Firmware Transfer Machine becomes available that allows firmware to be moved from one piece of gear to another of the same type, for a combined cost of money and eridium. For the purposes of transfer, heavy weapons and grenades are both treated as the same type. The item firmware is being copied from is destroyed, and any existing firmware on the item being copied to is lost. Firmware that has been transferred to another item once can't be copied again, but new firmware can be copied over it.
