Badasses are tougher versions of certain enemies. They usually have higher damage output than their regular counterparts and can often withstand more punishment as well. BadAss enemies may also drop higher quality equipment when they are killed. In addition to having "Badass" as part of their name, they can often be distinguished by having glowing eyes or other vivid additions to their appearance. Badass versions of creatures may also gain an elemental attribute, such as a fire-breathing skag or a corrosive scythid that explodes for corrosive damage when it dies.

In [[Playthrough 2]], badasses become "BadMuthas". In this form they are considerably more powerful than badasses and are harder to defeat. After beating the second playthrough, the BadMuthas are upgraded once more to become SuperBads, which are even stronger still.

There are three general types of enemies found in Borderlands: creatures, humans, and Guardians, all of whom can come in a Badass (1st Playthrough), BadMutha (2nd Playthrough) version, or SuperBad (After 2nd Playthrough).

Several automated weapon systems in Borderlands are also treated as enemies. The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned introduced various creatures of nightmare to the game, loosely collected under the term, "zombie". Claptrap's New Robot Revolution reintroduced the Claptraps as new enemies and added various humans and animals with claptrap robotic upgrades to further swell the Claptrap ranks.
