Divestments

Divestments, also titled Episode 5, is the fifth and final episode of New Tales from the Borderlands.

Episode Summary[]

The player characters have been captured by Susan Coldwell. Anu is unconscious and has been sent to have the green crystal surgically removed from her body. Octavio, traumatized after being tortured, has been thrown in a cell. Fran and L0U13 are being escorted away by Tediore guards for execution.

Octavio and Fran escape their imprisonment, reunite, and discover where Anu is being held, but not before accidentally launching the building into space. Meanwhile, Anu is sent on a psychic journey by the alien sharing her body, where she revisits the mistakes she has made with others, atones for her past sins, and convinces the spirit that humanity, while flawed, is capable of good.

Octavio and Fran find Anu being protected by a guard that turns out to be Stapleface, who's joined Tediore since the last time she was encountered. Together they head to the bridge, where Susan Coldwell is about to shoot a superweapon made from her part of the crystal at Promethea.

The weapon fires, killing half the population of the planet instantly and the other half slowly and excruciatingly. Susan grabs Anu with a large robot arm and demands that Anu reunite the shard in her body with the shard inside. This will enable the gun to resurrect the people of Promethea, but at the cost of Anu's life and giving Susan the means for intergalactic domination.

The player is given the choice of having Anu willingly merge with the crystal or refuse. Depending on the decision, the reunited crystal merges either with Anu or Susan, forming a new entity. The entity is bested by the team through talk and/or violence, the combined shard flies into space, and Promethea is healed, but the ship is beginning to enter the atmosphere.

There are five possible endings based on the relationships between the characters: three in which one of either Anu, Octavio, or Fran dies and the other two live, one where everybody lives except L0U13 and they decide to go their separate ways, and one where everyone survives and they stay together to start a corporate consulting company with many of the NPCs seen in the game as employees.

TIMM-E is seen flying through the cosmos with the ability to control his new teleporting powers. He welcomes the merged crystal and they combine into a hybrid being.

Fiona is revealed to be the audience for Marcus's narration. She leaves to follow the shard to the Gladius Nebula, but not before stealing Marcus's wallet.
