Lady Aurelia Hammerlock is the playable Baroness class character in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and the secondary antagonist of Borderlands 3. She is a Vault Hunter who was responsible for helping Handsome Jack rise to power, and is the sister of Sir Hammerlock.

Background

The heiress of the Hammerlock family fortune, Aurelia is the sister of Sir Alistair Hammerlock, with whom she shares a strained relationship due to her miserable treatment of him. As an exorbitantly wealthy socialite, she has taken up the hobby of hunting, traveling the galaxy to seek dangerous creatures to kill as well as making her brother's life even more miserable. Her travels eventually brought her to Elpis, where she wound up with a group of Vault Hunters hired by Jack.

According to Gaige's dialog in the Holodome Onslaught DLC, Aurelia was found on Epitah by Gaige and Axton, who were under orders from Lilith to find the vault on the planet. They managed to find Aurelia, under the additional order to kill her for her involvement with Hyperion. Before the order was carried out, Lilith ordered them to not kill Aurelia and bring her to Pandora, after Athena's execution was stopped by The Watcher, who warned them that war was approaching.

During the events of Borderlands 3, Aurelia has taken over the Jakobs Corporation with the help of Tyreen and Troy Calypso. They killed Montgomery Jakobs, and she became the corporation's CEO. She also bribed Clay's ally, Archimedes, with "Two planets around Eden-7 and enough funds to build a waterslide between them", for him to turn on Clay's Rogues. According to Clay himself, Aurelia also attempted to bribe him, but this failed, as Clay refused to betray Monty Jakobs.

Involvement

When the Vault Hunters show up on Eden-6 to reclaim the Eden-6 vault key, Aurelia offers them a huge sum of money to leave the planet. Wainwright Jakobs and Hammerlock recognize it as a trap, which they seize as an opportunity to search for clues. It is later revealed that Aurelia was never in Jakobs Estate at all, and she made a deal with Troy Calypso so they could kill the Vault Hunters. However, Troy is shot and led on a diversion by Wainwright, ruining the plan while the Vault Hunters managed to obtain information left by Montgomery before his death. During the assault on Eden-6's Vault, Sir Hammerlock and Wainwright are successful in solving the puzzles to find the key fragment, but Aurelia stops them before they can get away. Hammerlock attempts to reason with her, but she shoots both of them before Wainwright can fire, freezing them both and fights the Vault Hunters, but is ultimately killed. After being defrosted, Sir Hammerlock thanks the Vault Hunters for giving her a chance.

Trivia

  • Along with Nisha and Wilhelm, Aurelia is the third playable character that goes from being a protagonist to an antagonist.
  • In one of her idle quotes, Aurelia says that her mother sold her the family business. It is unknown what the business was, but there are mentions of "subjugating workers" and "mining operations." This suggests that the Hammerlock family may have had ties to the Dahl Corporation and their involvement on Pandora.
